Experiment: Omurice

Last night I tried my hand at making Omurice – the popular Japanese dish that is a mash-up of fried rice and an omelette. Typically flavored with ketchup (which I am not a fan of as many of you know), I decided to twist the fried rice using a recipe I saw on TV recently. I cooked the rice in a dashi broth – dashi, mirin, sake, and soy sauce – and used that as my primary flavoring. The rest of the fried rice was made with diced onion, minced garlic, diced red pepper, asparagus, and diced smoked ham. The egg mixture for the omelette is easy enough – one egg, some milk or cream, and sesame oil. The “dashi rice” (as I call it) is incredibly flavorful and fragrant – tasty in its own right and can be used for any number of other dishes and warrants a recipe of its own. Lastly, I dressed the omurice with a simple sauce of ketchup, sriracha, and worcestershire sauce. This sauce was slightly sweet, slightly spicy, and slightly savory – a great meld of flavors to complement the eggs and rice. As you can see in the photos, I had an epic fail in folding the omurice into its customary football shape, but frankly I didn’t care as this dish was incredibly delicious!

Enjoy!
