Devil’s Food Donuts

Easy, baked donuts?  Yes, please!  I found this recipe on Jennifer Meyerling’s blog and tweaked it by adding cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. The only challenge is buying a donut baking pan (and waiting patiently for it to arrive). I found mine on Amazon – standard and mini donut sizes. These donuts are perfect for a party because they are so easy to make, so easy to personalize, and let’s face it – so delicious! They are great for satisfying your sweet tooth as well if you cut the recipe into thirds to keep the amount of donuts made to a reasonable number. Wait, is there a reasonable number of donuts? I don’t think so… Either way, you will enjoy this variation of the good old reliable box cake mix. Now how easy is that?

Total time:
Serves: 24

Ingredients
Batter:
  • 1 (15.25 oz) box Devil's Food cake mix
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp vanilla
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
Glaze:
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil, melted
  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 3 Tbsp milk
Topping:
  • cocoa powder (optional)
  • powdered sugar (optional)
  • assorted sprinkles (optional)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
For the donuts
  1. Spray donut pans with non-stick cooking spray or grease lightly with coconut oil, set aside.
  2. Whisk together dry cake mix, spices, vanilla, egg, vegetable oil, and water until combined.
  3. Pour batter into a large, gallon sized plastic bag and snip off small portion of one corner. Squeeze donut mix into prepared donut pan until cups are about ½ full.
  4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 12-14 minutes.
  5. Let donuts cool in pan for about 5-10 minutes then remove and let cool completely on wire rack.
For the Glaze
  1. In a medium sized bowl, whisk together butter, powdered sugar, and milk until just combined.
  2. Dip the cooled donut about ½ way into the glaze then lift and turn sideways to let extra run off. Place back on wire cooling rack.
  3. Repeat with remaining donuts.
  4. Top with optional toppings and enjoy!

I glazed these donuts first then dusted cocoa powder and powdered sugar lightly on top.

Enjoy!

Your recipe doesn’t say when to add the nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla. I’m assuming the dry ingredients will all go in together and I will add the vanilla last.

Thank you for pointing out that omission. I have corrected the recipe.
