Experiment: Okonomiyaki

Today I decided to try and make a dish I have only had at restaurants, but enjoy immensely. Okonomiyaki – that delicious cabbage ‘pancake’ made with various vegetables and meats – seems simple but is actually quite challenging. The biggest challenge was deciding on a recipe; there are so many!  The next challenge was deciding on the ingredients I wanted to use and lastly, was making the okonomiyaki sauce and kewpie mayo that are necessary for this dish. Well, I think I pulled it off on my rookie attempt. Take a look at the pictures below and let me know what you think!   Enjoy! Save…

Chicken Chow Mein

Here is a recipe I found on RecipeTinEats. Nagi has a winner with this recipe and her versatile ‘Charlie‘ sauce is the best. Chow Mein is wonderful since it is easy and quick to prepare, loaded with vegetables, is easily adaptable with many different vegetable and meat combinations, and has plenty of flavor. In my version pictured, I added oyster mushrooms, red and green bell peppers, and white onion for even more vegetable flavors! Easy enough for a weeknight dinner, versatile enough for using up any leftover vegetables (or meats) you have, this recipe is a winner through and through. Give it a try! Singapore Noodles

Remember the sous vide Char Siu pork shoulder I recently made? Remember how I said it makes more then enough for several meals? Remember when I mentioned Singapore Noodles was one of the tasty dishes you can make with leftover Char Siu? Well, here is my take on Singapore Noodles!  With a little bit of prep and a little bit of staged stir frying, you will be savoring this dish in no time at all. By performing the preparation for all elements first, the rest of this dish is simply stir frying different ingredients and setting them aside until the final step. Check out the recipe below for how I made this unique meal – Singapore Noodles! Save Print Singapore Noodles Prep time:  20 mins Cook time…

Egg Foo Yung

Let’s start the new year with an often overlooked dish that deserves more recognition. I will admit even I forget about this simple, but versatile meal. So today I want to correct that and bring some love to egg foo yung. This recipe is just one of many variations possible – this dish is truly one where you can let your creativity run wild. And did I mention that it is fast to make? Quick, versatile, and tasty… this is a winner I need to make more often! Beef Stir Fry with Oyster Sauce

Here is a picture post of my recent Beef Stir Fry with Oyster Sauce made using slight changes to the Spicy Beef Noodles with Asparagus recipe.  I simply switched out the Tom Yum paste for a combination of 2 tablespoons of Oyster Sauce, 2 teaspoons of Fish Sauce, and 2 teaspoons of Seasoning Sauce while using 4 oz of plain Chuka Soba noodles instead of the Fortune Hot and Spicy Noodles. I started with these ingredients… and ended with this meal! Yum!     Save Save…

Spicy Beef Noodles with Asparagus

Today I had a hankering for noodles – tasty spicy fried noodles. With that desire and having asparagus available from earlier this week, I decided using thin sliced beef and red pepper would be perfect for my fried noodles. I picked up a package of Fortune Yakisoba Hot and Spicy Stir Fry Noodles at the local store to use as the base for my spicy fried noodles. These noodles are available in the refrigerated section and are simple to prepare – simply soak in hot water, drain well and stir fry. The rest of this recipe is a basic stir fry with one twist – I added Tom Yum Paste to the sauce mix. Are you ready to prepare something delicious and healthy in less than 30 minutes…

Garlic Cashew Chicken Stir Fry with Oyster Sauce

One of simplest meals to make is a stir fry… I said it before and I’m sure I will say it again. The reasons are simple enough too; you can create any number of flavor combinations using the same basic ingredients. As a matter of fact, I previously posted a recipe for Garlic Chicken Stir Fry. Tonight, I used cashews, sliced garlic and oyster sauce to create another variation. Garlic Cashew Chicken Stir Fry with Oyster Sauce Ingredients: 1 chicken breast, cut into 3/4 inch cubes 1/2 onion, sliced radially 1 carrot, sliced 1 stalk celery, sliced 1 1/2 cups broccoli flowerets (approximately 1 small crown of broccoli), cut into bite size pieces 1/2 red pepper, sliced 3 garlic cloves, thinly…

Garlic Chicken Stir Fry

Today was one of those interesting food days. I was hungry for a meal packed with fresh vegetables. And my favorite way to satisfy that hunger?  With a stir fry of course! A stir fry is so incredibly easy to make and so open to different ingredients (and amounts!), this recipe will give you the basics for a veggie packed stir fry with a light glaze. Now I’m hungry, so let’s get cooking! Garlic Chicken Stir Fry Ingredients: 8 – 12 oz chicken breast or chicken tenders, cut into 1 inch cubes 1 1/2 cups broccoli flowerets 1 carrot, sliced diagonally 1/2 onion, sliced 1 red pepper, julienned 2 large cloves garlic, slivered 2 tbsp cornstarch 2 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp…

Prawn Kimchi Fried Rice

When all that menu planning I discussed in an earlier post gets sidetracked, it is time to improvise. Today I was surveying the refrigerator and found the following items: about 1 cup of kimchi 1 carrot 3 green onions 1 red pepper 2 heads of broccoli Hmmm, that looks like the ingredients for a tasty fried rice.  I checked in the freezer and I had a partial bag of medium (51-60) prawns – perfect as the protein in my fried rice plan. So let’s get cooking, shall we? Prawn Kimchi Fried Rice Ingredients: 24 medium prawns (51-60 size), thawed, deveined, peeled and tails removed 3/4 – 1 cup of kimchi, cut into 3/4 inch 1 carrot, sliced diagonally or julienned 3 green…

Relaxing on a Friday Night with Sweet and Sour Chicken

Ahhh… it is the typical end of the work week and today I really do not want to spend a ton of time in the kitchen. And sometimes I just do not want to go out – I just want to chill out, but I have to eat. This meal is easy, provided you have the ‘special’ ingredients of the sauce and chunk pineapple. The rest is typical pantry and vegetable crisper fare.  So, let’s indulge on a nice relaxing Friday night with a tasty meal without having to order take out, delivery or even leave the house! Sweet and Sour Chicken Ingredients: 1 chicken breast, cut into 3/4 x 1 inch strips 1/2 red pepper, cut into 3/4 inch…
